Every workplace is different.

Different people. Different jobs. Different rules.

And yet, somehow, certain things seem to happen absolutely everywhere.

Whether you work in an office, a clinic, a restaurant, a salon, a store—or from the kitchen table in your pyjamas—you’ll probably recognize a few of these.

1. The Meeting That Could Have Been an Email

It begins with:

“This should only take about five minutes.”

Forty-seven minutes later, someone is still sharing their screen while everyone else quietly wonders what they’re having for lunch.

The grand conclusion?

Exactly what was written in the original email.

2. Someone Is Always Freezing

Every workplace has two temperature zones:

Antarctica and the surface of the sun.

There is no middle ground.

One person is wearing a sweater, scarf and possibly mittens while the person beside them has a fan pointed directly at their face.

The thermostat has caused more workplace disagreements than anyone would like to admit.

3. The Mysterious Fridge Container

Nobody knows who brought it.

Nobody knows how long it has been there.

Nobody wants to open it.

Eventually, it becomes part of the workplace.

New employees are simply warned about it during orientation.

“Washroom is down the hall, coffee is in the kitchen…and don’t touch the blue container.”

4. The Printer Knows When You’re in a Hurry

The printer works beautifully all day.

But the second you need something printed immediately?

PAPER JAM.

There is no paper jam.

You open every compartment.

You turn it off.

You turn it back on.

You politely ask it to cooperate.

Nothing.

Then someone else walks over, presses one button and it prints perfectly.

You now dislike both the printer and that person.

5. “Quick Question” Is Never a Quick Question

Someone appears beside you and says:

“Hey, quick question…”

Twenty minutes later, you’re looking at spreadsheets from 2022 and somehow discussing something Greg did three years ago.

There was nothing quick about this question.

6. Somebody Always Replies to Everyone

Congratulations!

The company has just sent an announcement to 137 employees.

One person replies:

“Thanks!”

To everyone.

Then someone else replies:

“Please remove me from this email.”

To everyone.

And suddenly 137 people are involved in a conversation nobody wanted to have.

7. Lunch Is a Major Topic of Conversation

At approximately 9:42 a.m., somebody asks:

“What are you doing for lunch?”

And from that moment forward, productivity decreases dramatically.

Menus appear.

Opinions are expressed.

Delivery fees are debated.

One person says, “I don’t care.”

That person will reject the next six suggestions.

8. Everyone Has a Favourite Mug

There may be 28 perfectly good mugs in the cupboard.

Doesn’t matter.

You want your mug.

And when you find Steve drinking coffee out of it?

Steve has crossed a line.

9. Friday Has Its Own Energy

Monday at 8:30 a.m.:

Silence.

Friday at 3:47 p.m.:

Someone is playing music.

Someone is eating something they definitely didn’t bring for lunch.

Someone has mentally gone home.

And somebody announces:

“Well…I’m not starting THAT today.”

A statement immediately supported by the entire room.

10. Every Workplace Has “The Person Who Knows”

Nobody remembers officially assigning them this job.

But they know everything.

Wi-Fi password?

Ask them.

Where are the envelopes?

Ask them.

How do you fix the printer?

Ask them.

When did we stop ordering those pens?

Ask them.

Who ate Karen’s yogurt?

They probably know that too.

Work Would Be Boring Without the People

Jobs can be stressful, busy and occasionally downright chaotic.

But it’s usually the little everyday moments—and the people we share them with—that make work memorable.

The inside jokes.

The coffee runs.

The ongoing battle over the thermostat.

The Friday afternoon conversations that have absolutely nothing to do with work.

And, of course, that one mysterious container still sitting in the fridge.

Seriously.

Someone needs to throw that thing out.
