Patient safety from the start!

World Patient Safety Day is an opportunity to raise public awareness, foster collaboration between stakeholders and mobilize global action to improve patient safety.

This year, the theme is “Safe care for every newborn and every child”, with the slogan “Patient safety from the start!”, recognizing the vulnerability of this age group to risks and harm caused by unsafe care.  

Urgent action is needed to eliminate avoidable harm in paediatric and newborn care, building on the efforts of previous campaigns on ‘safe childbirth’, ‘prioritizing patient safety’, ‘health worker safety’, ‘medication safety’, ‘patient and family engagement’ and ‘diagnostic safety’. World Patient Safety Day 2025 aims to drive meaningful improvements and reaffirm every child's right to safe and quality care.

To observe World Patient Safety Day on September 17th, you can join or organize events, raise awareness about the theme of the year (like patient engagement or improving diagnosis), light up buildings in orange, share stories and experiences, and advocate for policies that promote safer healthcare. The goal is to unite patients, families, healthcare workers, and policymakers to foster commitment to improving patient safety and reducing harm in healthcare systems.
 

Actions you can take:

• Get involved with the global campaign:

Visit the World Health Organization (WHO) website to find out the specific theme for World Patient Safety Day each year and learn how to participate in the global "light up orange" initiative, where iconic landmarks are illuminated in orange to symbolize commitment to patient safety. 

• Organize or attend events:

Plan or participate in public awareness campaigns, webinars, or workshops focused on patient safety and engagement. 

• Become an advocate:

• Raise awareness: Inform others about the importance of patient rights to safe healthcare. 

• Lobby policymakers: Urge governments to invest in building safer healthcare systems.
