Carving a pumpkin is a classic Halloween tradition, with endless possibilities for creative and spooky designs. Whether you prefer a simple, friendly jack-o'-lantern or a more detailed masterpiece, you can choose from themes that are cute, eerie, or truly unique.

Easy and classic ideas

  • Friendly face: A smiling jack-o'-lantern with triangle eyes is a classic for a reason. It's simple, quick, and ideal for a welcoming Halloween atmosphere.
  • "BOO!": Use a cookie cutter or a small knife to punch out the letters "B-O-O" on the front of the pumpkin. Add a battery-powered light inside to make the letters glow.
  • Simple silhouettes: Carve the outline of a cat, a bat, or a ghost. These shapes are straightforward and recognizable.
  • Constellation pumpkin: Use a drill or metal skewers to poke holes of varying sizes into the pumpkin. When lit from within, the holes will look like a starry night sky.

Creative and spooky designs

  • Cannibal pumpkin: Carve one large pumpkin with a mouth full of jagged teeth, then add a smaller, "scared" pumpkin coming out of its mouth.
  • "Hungry" pumpkin: This variation on the cannibal pumpkin features a mouth carved wide enough to hold a smaller pumpkin inside.
  • Spider web: Carve a circular opening and paint the inside of the pumpkin black. Weave metallic string through a series of holes to create a web, then add a plastic spider for a dramatic effect.
  • Haunted house: Create a spooky scene with a glowing haunted house and tiny, glowing windows. For a dimensional effect, you can use surface peeling alongside deep cuts.
  • Fanged pumpkins: Use toothpicks and pumpkin seeds to create a truly menacing, sharp-toothed grin on any pumpkin.

Cute and fun ideas

  • Owl pumpkin: Use the shape of the pumpkin to guide an easy owl design. Carve large, round eyes for a wide-eyed, cute effect.
  • Smiling bat: Carve a friendly, smiling bat into your jack-o'-lantern for a cute, witchy look that's not too creepy.
  • "Fall leaves" pumpkin: Trace and carve intricate fall leaf patterns into the pumpkin for a festive, harvest-themed decoration.
  • Pineapple pumpkin: Give your pumpkin a tropical twist by carving out triangle "scales" and cutting off the top. Use the green stem as the pineapple's leafy top.
  • Candy-coated face: Instead of carving features, attach Halloween candy like candy corn, jelly beans, and gum to form the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Next-level ideas

  • Scalloped-edge pumpkins: Instead of a traditional carved top, create a decorative scalloped or V-shaped edge around the opening. These are great for stacking on a table or mantel.
  • Mushroom display: Stack smaller, flatter pumpkins on top of larger ones to create mushroom shapes. Carve small circles into the top "mushroom cap" for a toadstool effect.
  • Carved candlestick: Transform a tall squash or pumpkin into a candlestick by carving a decorative base. Place a flameless candle or string lights inside for a soft glow.
  • Pumpkin vase: Hollow out a pumpkin and use it as a vase for fresh or artificial autumn flowers.
